Our Most and Least Favourite Dog Owner Traits!

While the majority of dog owners are very responsible,  a few people out there are giving the others a bad name.

Below are a few of the most and least favourite traits of dog owners as described by the Can We Take The Dog team – we would love to hear yours!

Favorite

When children ask ‘Can I stroke your dog?’ – it’s great that they have been taught to respect dogs, and that there may be a reason why they can’t touch a dog. It always pleases me when people ask, and Meg loves a cuddle from a small person!

Least Favourite

Owners who say “He won’t bite!”. This is often said as a reaction to someone trying to discourage their child ,or their own dog, from getting too close.
While your dog may have never bitten anyone in the past, this does not mean to say it won’t in the future, and if you assume they never will, you are asking for trouble.

Favorite

Dog owners who see you walking towards them with your dog on a lead – and automatically put theirs on a lead too. There are many reasons a dog may be on a lead, and it’s great when other dog owners respect that.

Least Favourite

“It’s alright! He’s/She’s fine!!” Normally shouted at you when off-lead dog is thundering towards your on-lead dog at 20mph!

Favorite

People out walking their dogs with treat bags, clickers, whistles. I love to see dogs being actively trained when out on their walks!

Least Favourite

People who complain “My dog chews up the sofa/won’t stop barking/cries when left I’ve tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING works”. This usually translates to, I have only used positive punishment methods, (which unsurprisingly didn’t work), followed by trying to give the dog up for free on Facebook/Gumtree.
